Mining Engineer's Lamp, late 1800s

This kind of oil lamp was popular among engineers. With its thick cast iron body it was marketed as unbreakable. The lamps were usually fuelled with colza oil (a type of rapeseed oil) which could also be used as a lubricant in engineering because it didn't dry up.

A C Wells and Company of Manchester made a variety of oil lamps for both industrial and domestic use.
