Miner's Paraffin Cap Lamp, around 1870

This lamp would be worn on a miner's hat. It was a simple container that would be filled with paraffin and a wick run through the spout. A naked light like this could only be used in mines where there were not pockets of explosive methane. This one was used by a mine who lived in Bellshill, Lanarkshire.
