Brochure for Carpet Cleaning Machines, early 1900s

This brochure for Alexander Orr of Edinburgh's carpet beating machines mentions that North Berwick is one of the places they have supplied machinesto. A machine made for a North Berwick business in 1908 is now in the museum collection.

Alexander Orr (1838-1918) became a Master Cabinetmaker in Edinburgh in the mid-1860s, first on Nelson Place and then North Pitt Street (now Dundas Street) where he added carpet-beating to the services he provided. Orr received patents for carpet-beating machines he designed and built at his factory, just round the corner on the north side of Fettes Row. The factory burned down in 1918, just weeks before Alexander Orr died.
