Northburn Steel Plate

The Northburn Steel Works in Coatbridge was built by the Steel Company of Scotland with the support of the Ministry of Munitions to meet demand for steel during the First World War. In the event, the war was over by the time the steelworks went into production in 1920. Coatbridge's largest steelworks, Northburn had three open hearth furnaces, each capable of making 40 tons of steel at a time. It also had a rolling mill powered by electricity rather than steam, a rarity at that time. In 1938, the company merged with William Baird and Company's Gartsherrie Iron Works to form Bairds and Scottish Steel. Pig iron was transported from Gartsherrie to feed the steel furnaces at Northburn. Both eventually closed in 1967.
