Boilermaker's Tap

A 'tap' is used for cutting a screw thread in a hole. It is usually used in conjunction with a 'die', which cuts the 'male' thread while the tap cuts the 'female' thread. So the tap cuts the thread in a nut and the die cuts the thread in the corresponding bolt. Both can also be used to clean up (or 'chase') a damaged thread. This tap was used in Thomas Hudson and Company's Sheepford Boiler Works in Coatdyke.
