Summerlee Brick

A brick marked Summerlee. This mark has been traced to the Prestongrange Brick and Firebrick Works in East Lothian, c. 1907-1947. The brick is fireclay, a heat-resistant type of brick used to line furnaces. These were essential to heavy industry for a long time, and central Scotland was home to the most productive fireclay brickworks in the world due to its high allumina clay.
