Sample of the Last Steel Rolled at Garcosh, 1986

The Cold Reduction Mill at Gartcosh Steel Works opened in 1962 to make thin sheets from strip steel supplied by the new strip mill at Ravenscraig Steel Works. The sheet steel was used to make cars, trains, kitchen sinks and many other products. The new facility was built alongside an older works that had been taken over by Smith and McLean in 1872. The 'Old Works' continued to operate alongside the new.
