Ladies' Open Bloomers, 1900s

White cotton drawers with decorative lace trim, dating to the early 1900s. Open-crotch drawers, mainly worn by the middle class, were a necessity for easily dealing with bodily waste while wearing rigid 1800s corsets. The design of drawers slowly changed from open to closed crotch from 1900 to 1920.

Drawers slowly became closed from 1900-1920 with design to help to switch from open to close through button closures along the opening or an attached narrow piece of fabric that could fill in the gap when needed, with buttons at mid-point between the legs. As fashions changed with women wearing trousers, more flexible corsets, and shorter skirts so did the drawers.
