Colliery Winding Engine, 1920s

This steam winding engine was built by engineering firm Murray & Paterson at their Coatbank Works in Whifflet, Coatbridge. They specialised in mining machinery and were commissioned by coal owners James Dunlop & Co. to build this engine for their new colliery at Cardowan, Stepps, which was sunk and constructed 1924-1928. It was one of two steam winding engines at Cardowan, both by Murray & Paterson.

With Cardowan’s closure in 1983 it faced an uncertain future until it was acquired by Summerlee Museum in the mid-1980s.
