Provost James Russell (1865-1868) by G Ogilvie Reid, around 1869

James Russell was the first Provost of Motherwell. Leith-born George Ogilvy Reid (1851-1928) was a Scottish landscape and portrait artist who lived his entire life in Leith. In 1891 Queen Victoria commissioned Reid to paint a commemorative picture of the christening of her grandson, Prince Maurice of Battenberg, at Balmoral.
