Amputation Knife, 1950s

Used in the operating theatre at Hartwood Hospital, Shotts. The psychiatric hospital opened in 1895 and was entirely self sustaining, with its own farm, reservoir, graveyard, power plant and even railway. The hospital was a pioneer of electric shock therapy and was reputedly the first hospital in Scotland to perform a lobotomy.
