Ironstone Mine on Raasay, about 1915

The Coatbridge ironmasters William Baird & Company bought the island of Raasay in 1911 for its ironstone deposits. This postcard shows part of the company's Inverarish Ironstone Mine No.1. The pier was used to transport the iron ore to the Clyde and onwards to the company's blast furnaces at Gartsherrie and in Ayrshire.
