Gartsherrie Iron Works, around 1964

This ironworks was comprehensively rebuilt in the 1950s with Blast Furnace No.1 commissioned in 1960. This photograph shows a modern blast furnace with, to the right, two of the stoves which provided the 'hot blast' to the furnace.

When the Gartsherrie works closed in 1967 it was Coatbridge's last pig iron works.
