Pocket Watch Awarded to John McCabe for Heroism, 1918

16 year old John McCabe saved many lives from an inrush of peat and water ('moss') at Stanrigg Pit near Airdrie on 9 July 1918 by warning others. The disaster claimed 19 lives.

This watch was presented to John McCabe by the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust. There is an etched inscription inside the lid reading: "PRESENTED BY / THE TRUSTEES OF THE / CARNEGIE HERO FUND / TO / JOHN McCABE / AIRDRIE / FOR HEROISM IN SAVING / HUMAN LIFE 9TH JULY / 1918".
