Bridge over the Monkland Canal at Calderbank, around 1868

This early view shows a railway line crossing the Monkland Canal via a timber bridge close to the Calderbank Iron Works.

The earliest railways in the area were usually designed to work with the canals rather than compete with them and took the form of private mineral lines transporting coal, ironstone and limestone from mines to the waterway.
