Barges at Calderbank Quay, 2 April 1868

This unusually early view of the Monkland Canal is full of fascinating details. The location is close to the Calderbank Iron Works and there is lots of industrial activity going on.

There are what appear to be wooden pit props stacked to the left hand side and look how low in the water the nearest barge is: perhaps it is carrying newly-made iron or raw materials for the ironworks.
