Clydesdale Works Smelters, 1908

The Clydesdale Iron and Steel Co began as a general ironworks but in 1871 it started making iron strip for making into tubes. In the 1880s the firm added steel furnaces as steel slowly started to replace iron in many applications including tubemaking. This group of men and boys worked at the steel furnaces. The steel-rimmed glasses they are sporting would be tinted blue to provide some protection from the fierce light of the furnaces.

In 1889 the company merged with two other concerns run by members of the Stewart family to create A & J Stewart and Clydesdale Ltd.
