Making Moulds for Pig Iron at Coltness Iron Works, early 1900s

These three boys are moulding a casting bed. They are using wooden patterns to make the shape of the iron pigs that are about to be cast from a blast furnace. The patterns are pressed into the sand which is pressed down and kept moist using a watering can. The pattern is then removed and then the motlen iron can be released from the furnace and allowed to flow into the freshly-made moulds.
