Moving Raw Materials at Coltness Iron Works, early 1900s

These workers are moving raw materials for making pig iron. They have transferred the materials from the railway wagons on which they arrived onto hand barrows and are waiting below a hydraulic hoist tower which will transport them 20 metres up to the furnace tops. There the raw materials (coal, ironstone and limestone) will be tipped into the furnace mouths.
