'Charging' a Furnace at Coltness Iron Works, early 1900s

This photo is taken on the platform at the top of one of the blast furnaces at Coltness. The raw materials are carried up in two-wheeled hand-barrows and then tipped into the mouth of the furnace. The furnace mouth is closed by the bell mechanism that you can see in the centre of the image.
