Matron Elsie Frew (front right) was from Airdrie and before the war had helped set up the Girl Guides there. With this background, she also recruited for the Voluntary Aid Detachment during the war. Her father was Alexander Frew, Provost of Airdrie. She would met her future husband, Lieutenant Graham Thomson Lyall VC, when he was recovering at Drumpellier.
