Cardowan Colliery methane plant, Stepps, early 1980s

Photograph showing the methane extraction plant at Cardowan Colliery, 1980s. The coal seam that Cardowan mined was notoriously gassy, and meant extra precautions had to be taken underground.

Hot methane was collected underground and pumped to the surface for firing boilers and sold to the Scottish Gas Board at Provan Gas Works (still visibile from the M8 motorway) prior to the arrival of North Sea Gas. They also supplied the Black and White Whisky Distillers at Stepps.
