Wishaw miners at the coalface, 1936

An unnamed group of Wishaw miners at the coalface, 1936. The miners along the back row are wearing caps with fittings for a carbide lamp. These were known locally as 'Yankee caps', either because they were similar to baseball caps or because they were of American manufacture. They were still in use until the 1950s, when they were replaced by helmets made from compressed pulp.
