Winding engine at Stane Colliery, Shotts, around 1900

Photograph of a colliery winding engine at Stane Colliery, near Shotts, about 1900. Winding engines raise and lower both coal and miners up and down the pit shaft. Older examples like this transfer their power from the engine house to the pit headframe through cables connected between a winding 'drum' and a rotating wheel on the headframe, with an engine operator controlling the direction of travel.
