Dalzell Steel Works Employees, 1920

This photograph shows workers from No.2 Melting Shop at the Dalzell Works.

The melting shop was where steel was made in furnaces. The furnaces were fed with pig iron and scrap iron and here you can see the workers, some of them boys surrounded by scrap that is no doubt destined for the furnaces. The workers wear their own clothes, with thick-soled boots with metal studs. Some of them hav aprons to protect their trousers and tinted spectacles to shield their eyes from the glare of the molten metal.
