Bar of Pig Iron, Shotts, before 1947

Shotts Iron Works opened in 1801 to produce cast iron. Its products such as lamp standards became world famous and were widely exported.

Today the furnace bank and a unique ornate water tower survive as Category B listed structures. Another unique survival is an ore calcinating kiln where iron ore was roasted before being fed into the blast furnaces. The tower provided a head or water to cool the 'tuyeres' or nozzles that fed air into the furnaces.
