Apprentice Steelworker's Toolbox

This toolbox was made by an apprentice with British Steel at their training centre in Mossend, Bellshill in 1974.

Mr Steven lived in Kilbirnie and was apprenticed at the nearby Glengarnock Steel Works. Glengarnock had been taken over by Colville's after the First World War but was part of British Steel by the time Mr Steven began his apprenticeship.

One of Mr Steven's jobs at Glengarnock was to prepare test samples of steel rails for the tensile testing machine. This machine is now on display at Summerlee Museum.
