'D' Furnace, Ravenscraig Steel Works, 1960s or early 1970s

This photograph shows an Open Hearth steel furnace at the Ravenscraig Works in Motherwell.

This method of steelmaking could make large quantities but was slow. It was phased out by British Steel in the mid-1970s in favour of the faster Basic Oxygen Process.
