Plan of Ravenscraig Steel Works

Built in the 1950s and early '60s, Ravenscraig was Scotland's biggest and most advanced steelworks. The hot strip mill which opened in 1962 was the largest in western Europe.

This roll-up vinyl plan probably came from the Lecture Theatre building, which you can see near the bottom of the plan. It shows the whole site with the large buildings housing the steel furnaces and rolling mills to the left. Further right are coke ovens, the blast furnaces and ore handling facilities. The famous gasholders and cooling towers that were once such a landmark of Motherwell are at the bottom right.
