Plan Showing Bulkheads of the Vulcan

This is a copy of one of the drawings made for the construction of the replica of the canal barge Vulcan in the 1980s.

The Vulcan (1819) was Scotland's first iron boat and the world's first iron passenger vessel. She was built at Faskine on the Monkland Canal for service on the Forth and Clyde Canal.

The replica was built by former shipyard workers at British Shipbuilders Training at Linthouse on the River Clyde. She was commissioned by Monklands District Council for display at the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. The replica of the Vulcan was probably the last vessel built on the Clyde using traditional riveting techniques.

The replica was designed by Fred Walker of the National Maritime Museum and the drawings made by George Corbett. He had the copies made by British Shipbuilders at their nearby Govan yard.
