Pig Breaker

This triangular block of cast iron was used by workers at the Summerlee Iron Works to break up bars of pig iron, an incredibly arduous job that was done by hand right up until the ironworks ceased iron production in about 1929. By that time more modern ironworks had machines to do this work much more quickly.

The pig breaker was found during excavations on the ironworks site during the 1980s.
