Tensile Testing Machine

This machine was made to test the tensile strength of samples of malleable iron and, later steel by literally pulling them apart and measuring how much energy this took.

The testing machine was used by the Mossend Iron Company in its malleable iron works. They later merged with the Summerlee Iron Company. By the time it was donated to the museum service the machine had been moved to the Test Shop at Glengarnock Steel Works in Ayrshire
