Poster for the Replica Vulcan

The Glasgow Garden Festival ran from 26 April to 26 September 1988 on the south bank of the Clyde. It was the first such event in the city since the 1938 Empire Exhibition.

Monklands District Council commissioned a replica of the Vulcan, Scotland's first iron boat as the centrepiece of its display. The replica was built by unemployed former shipyard workers at nearby Linthouse. Joiners continued to work on the boat while it was on display at the festival.

The replica of the Vulcan is now an exhibit at Summerlee Museum. The boatshed from the festival was also relocated to Summerlee, which opened that same year.
