Ceremonial Horn, 1880-1920s

Used by the Ancient Order of Foresters friendly society. The roots of friendly societies can be traced back to the early mutual benefit organisations that were active in 17th century Scotland. The Foresters were established in the 1720s.

Corrigan Family · Townhead, Coatbridge · The donor found the horn in his parent's house and remembers it from his childhood over 40 years ago. His parents died recently and their connection to the AOF is not known.
friendly society: Ancient Order of Foresters · The Ancient Order of Foresters (now trading as the Foresters Friendly Society) was established as a friendly society in 1834 but originated from the older Royal Foresters Society, which was formed in the 1720s-40s. According to their official website the year was 1723.
