NCB leaflet on safety lamp flame shapes, Bedlay Colliery, 1982

With methane a safety lamp flame burns brighter and has a blue colour, like on a gas hob. Leaflets like this informed miners on how to use their lamp flame to identify methane and estimate its concentration in the air.
