Built between 1975 and 1979, the new deepwater terminal at Hunterston, Ayrshire was built to receive raw materials for the Ravenscraig Steel Works in Motherwell. It replaced General Terminus Quay on the Clyde, which was unable to handle the increasingly large ships that were used to transport the iron ore.

The complex included reduction plants to convert iron ore into pellet form, which was more efficient when fed into the blast furnaces. After Ravenscraig closed the port was used to import coal for power stations but as these stations were phased out it was closed in 2016.
