Leg Irons, Airdrie, around 1850 – 1900

Leg cuffs were locked around the ankles to restrict movement and prevent running or physical resistance. Such shackles were typically used on prisoners, slaves and chain gangs. This example dates from the mid to late 1800s and forms part of the Airdrie Museum Collection.
