Birch Rod, Airdrie, around 1822 – 1850

This 6oz birch is believed to have been used by the Airdrie Burgh Police Force. Birching was the common form of corporal punishment in Europe until the mid-1800s. It was officially abolished as a judicial penalty in the United Kingdom in 1948.
