Air Meter, 1930s

This is an air meter with brass fittings in a wooden carrying box. The meter gauges air flow by means of a fan, and a white enamel dial gives a reading depending on the speed of the fan. It was important to test air flow through the mines, as a good air flow prevented dangerous gases from building up. This device was used by coal miner, Duncan Ferguson. He was born in 1875, the son of a mine manager at Lochore and Benatry Colliery, north of Cowdenbeath in Fife. Duncan's first job was at nearby Hill of Beath. Later in his career he joined the Coltness Iron Company for whom he became the manager of Kingshill Colliery, Allanton near Wishaw (1928-1947).
