Shell Steel Paperweight
This is a section of steel used to make shells at Motherwell's Dalzell Steel Works during the First World War. Steelworks and factories were taken over for the war effort and for the first time women worked in industry in large numbers, although only for the duration of the war. Producing ammunition was an extremely dangerous job not just because of the risk of explosion but also accidents and the danger from toxic chemicals. More than 200 British women died making munitions during the First World War.
