Andrew and James Stewart founded the largest tubeworks in Scotland beside the Monkland Canal in Coatbridge in 1867. A & J Stewart eventually became part of Stewarts and Lloyds, the biggest maker of steel tubes in the UK.

The Clyde Tube Works took its name from Andrew Stewart's earlier, much smaller tubeworks which was near the River Clyde in central Glasgow.
