Friendly Society Gavel, 1800s

Possibly used by the Airdrie Weavers Society. The Weavers was one of many friendly societies operating in North Lanarkshire in the 1800s. Many were organised on a trade basis which helped create a sense of brotherhood. Over time they opened up membership to other workers although some societies remained closed to underground workers.
