Shrapnel pieces from the Cydebank Blitz, March 1941

These were found in the door of the donor's uncle after a 9 hour bombing raid on 13th March 1941. It is not known if they are from a bomb blast, from a Luftwaffe aircraft, or from defensive anti-aircraft fire - they are described as having come from a shower of metal which bounced off the roof and hit the door. Firefighting teams from across Scotland, including from Lanarkshire, were called in to help Clydebank which was heavily bombed over two night raids in March 1941. 528 people were killed, with 4,000 of the town's 12,000 homes completely destroyed and another 4,500 severely damaged.
