'Geordie' Miner's Lamp, early 1900s
Made by John Spence & Sons, Airdrie, this safety lamp includes its own carrying case. 'Geordie' lamps were along with the 'Davy' one of the earliest safety lamp designs and were so called after their inventor, George Stephenson, who also known for his pioneering railway inventions. The ‘Geordie’s’ gauze filter means it doesn’t provide much light. However it can be used to safely test for firedamp.
