'Geordie' Miner's Lamp, early 1900s

Made by John Spence & Sons, Airdrie, this safety lamp includes its own carrying case. 'Geordie' lamps were along with the 'Davy' one of the earliest safety lamp designs and were so called after their inventor, George Stephenson, who also known for his pioneering railway inventions. The ‘Geordie’s’ gauze filter means it doesn’t provide much light. However it can be used to safely test for firedamp.

Dear Sir/Madam, I have two lamps very similar to these 'Geordie' Lamps. I wonder if you could give me some more information on the variants of these. They are probably reproductions, but some information on their details would be brilliant. Many thanks, Chris DEAR CHRIS, MANY THANKS FOR YOUR MESSAGE. IF CAN SEND SOME IMAGES TO US AT MUSEUMCOLLECTIONS@NORTHLAN.GOV.UK WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO IDENTIFY THE LAMPS.
