Ration card, Airdrie, First World War

When the First World War began there was a wave of panic buying and food shops were emptied very quickly. Sugar, as an imported product, was rationed relatively early. The local food supply was mostly managed by the Burgh councils.

Full rationing was not implemented until 1918 and long bread lines were a daily occurrence throughout the war. This ration card belonged to John Henderson, from Airdrie.
