Airdrie Thistle Lodge Free Gardeners Apron, 1844

The friendly society was instituted in 1841 to protect working people. Families would pay a regular subscription and they would receive benefits in times of need. The societies played a crucial role in working class communities in the days when having no income normally meant a life of begging or living in the poorhouse.
