Coats Iron and Steel Works Flag

The Coats Iron Works was built in 1854 to turn pig iron into malleable iron using the Puddling Process. In 1859 this works became one of the first to experiment with Henry Bessemer's new steelmaking process which involved blowing air through a vessel containing molten iron.

In 1869 a tubeworks was built alongside the ironworks but run as a separate business. The ironworks became part of the Scottish Iron and Steel Co Ltd in 1912.
