Miner's Tallow Lamp

Small brass jug-shaped lamp on which the spout is soldered to the body and the handle is in the form of a clip which fitted into the miner's hat, freeing his hands. The wick was connected to a supply of tallow or oil in the body of the lamp, which fueled the flame. Lamps like this were a great help to miners, but also a danger due to pockets of flammable gas underground.
