Roman coins

These six Roman coins, all from the same hoard found at Caldercruix in 1842, are silver denarii from the reigns of Vespasian, Domitian, Trajan and Hadrian, matching the period of Roman contact with Scotland. Domitian is of special interest. He was emperor at the time of Agricola's defeat of the Caledonii, but afterwards recalled the general to Rome, cutting short his efforts to consolidate his victory, and was rumoured to have had him assassinated out of jealousy of his achievements.
