Samian ware pottery fragment

A piece of red terra cotta pottery from the edge of a pot, decorated on one side with a moulded pattern. This was excavated from the Roman bathhouse at Bothwellhaugh. It is an example of Samian ware, a distinctive red-coloured pottery mass produced in factories in Italy and Gaul, spanning much of the period of the Roman Empire.
